SUMMARY:Presenting Prehistory: What Dinosaurs Can Teach Us About the Evolution of Modern Avian Reproduction Systems with Dr. Jason Hogan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jason Hogan\, a recent graduate of MSU’s Earth Science’s doctoral program\, will present his dissertation work on Maniraptoran dinosaur nesting physiology. \nThe vast majority of modern birds incubate their eggs by warming them with adult-generated heat. However\, their closest living relatives\, crocodilians\, all bury their eggs. Dinosaurs help us understand the gap between these two groups\, and through experimentation and remarkable fossil finds we can get an idea of how modern bird reproductive strategies might have come to be. \nThis unique speaker series explores the newest paleontological findings and current hypotheses featuring leading scientists who lead the charge to better understand how life on Earth has changed. After each lecture\, there will be a meet-and-greet with refreshments. \nFree for members; $5/non-member\nRegistration is required \nBio: Jason Hogan earned his undergraduate degree at Duke University and a Master’s in Education from Harvard. He then spent time as an educator\, teaching everything from chemistry to physics to history of science. Later he pursued his Ph.D. in paleontology at Montana State University. In 2023 he earned the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology’s Romer Prize for his investigations into maniraptoran dinosaur nesting and its relationship to the evolution of modern avian reproductive strategies.

SUMMARY:Presenting Prehistory: Digging Deeper Into Egg Mountain: A Unique Late Cretaceous Terrestrial Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:Egg Mountain (a.k.a. MOR’s Beatrice R. Taylor Paleontology Research Area) became world famous in 1979 for producing the first dinosaur eggs and egg clutches from North America. Join us to explore this fascinating site in more depth as Dr. Varricchio digs deeper into Egg Mountain.\nDavid Varricchio came to Montana State University in 1989 to study dinosaurs under Jack Horner. He returned to MSU as a professor in the Earth Sciences Department in 2003. His research explores dinosaur paleobiology and Cretaceous paleoecology by focusing on the interface between biologic and geologic processes\, blending taphonomy\, ichnology and sedimentology within a broader evolutionary context. Past and ongoing research includes work on dinosaur eggs and reproduction\, bone beds\, the theropod Troodon\, dino and horseshoe crab tracks\, and sites like Egg Mountain.
