DESCRIPTION:This one-day Field and Museum Experience is for 5-12 year olds who are curious\, adventurous and eager to explore real fossils in the Montana badlands along with taking a “deep dive” into our dinosaur museum uncovering secrets and solving prehistoric mysteries. The full day program is split into a morning and afternoon session with a lunch break in between. The morning session runs from 9 am-Noon at a fossil dig site outside of Malta (about 30 miles) where field program kids learn how paleontologists find\, excavate\, and record fossils. The afternoon session runs 1:30-3 pm at the museum where kids clean and study real specimens in our fossil preparation lab and tour the museum. Limited number of participants and pre-registration required. Parents/Guardians provide transportation to and from the dig site while Museum Staff lead the program at both locations.

SUMMARY:14th Annual Dino Shindig\, Carter County Museum
DESCRIPTION:Named Montana’s Event of the Year by the Office of Tourism and Business Development\, the Annual Dino Shindig takes place at the end of July. Visitors travel from all over the world to hear lectures from leading paleontologists\, partake in kids activities\, and dance the night away. Talks and kid’s activities on July 25 are $10 for adults and $7 for kids (under 13)\, on sale at the Carter County Museum during the event.\nThe Annual Dino Shindig Auction includes a silent auction that runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the St. Elizabeth Lutheran Church (where the talks are located). The Live Auction will begin after the talks at 4:30 p.m.\nSunday offers a Fossil Field Dig Expedition to sites around the area from 8:30 am-5 pm. Tickets go on sale in January each year/currently SOLD OUT. Also Sunday is the Science and Cultural History Gathering at Medicine Rocks State Park\, a short drive north of Ekalaka\, from 10 am-2 pm (or so).\nA full schedule of events will be posted on July 1\, 2026!
